Anne Donovan replied to Math Chique's discussion Vertical Curve Problem in the group Math Problem Solving
"Idea! since each tangent intersects the parabola once, a system of equations may be set up to find a, b, and c in the quadratic equation. I'll have to try that."

Anne Donovan replied to Math Chique's discussion Vertical Curve Problem in the group Math Problem Solving
"The equation of the tangent lines are y = -0.05x + 105 and y = 0.02x + 98 but I'm not sure where to go from there."

Vertical Curve Problem

Vertical Curve Problem  Given:   Two tangents to a roadway profile intersect at an elevation of 100.  The first tangent is at a 2% uphill grade and the second tangent is a -5% downhill grade. Calculate the equation ofa 200 ft parabolic curve connecting the two tangents and the elevation at themid point of the curve. Let the “x” origin be at the beginning of the curve. See More

Math Chique replied to Teaching in Harmony's discussion COMMON ASSESSMENTS
"This is a great question. Common assessments can be done well or poorly. The most effective way, in my experience, is to have a "lead" teacher for a particular course, (for the purpose of this discussion, I will use Geometry) or in a…"

Math Chique replied to Colin McAllister's discussion Height of a distant skyscraper? in the group Math Problem Solving
"Working backwards, knowing that the height of the tower is 828 m, I calculate that it can be seen from about 102.7 km away (not 95 km). The Distance to Horizon Calculator's answer is consistent with this information. Using your value of 95 km,…"
