"Assuming the concept is related to other concepts we have studied, I explain how it fits in a larger picture.  For example, when I introduce inverse functions, I explain how they are special and how they are like other types of functions and…"

### Teaching developmental math

There is a growing need to learn math for those who have had a bad experience with math in the past, or who have been away from math for a long time.I am interested in improved techniques for teaching math to this group of people.See More

"Kevin, I read your post with interest. I had a similar idea (http://mathematics24x7.ning.com/forum/topics/form-following-function-aka?xg_source=activity) and Colin gave me a link to your post. I plan to use my favorite tool, GeoGebra, for the…"

"Thanks for the lead, Colin. By "rational function", I meant the ratio of polynomials of the same or different degree. I didn't mean to disallow irrational numbers."

"Good idea, Danny. Irrational numbers would be automatically permitted, as it is impossible to draw a circle without representing the ratio pi, or a right angle triangle without representing a square root. Refer to Kevin Hurley's comment of to…"

### Form following function (aka functional art)

Ok, "functional art" is something I just made up, but it goes with an idea.Standing outside the community college classroom where I teach math, I was looking at the wall hangings of art students.  They were the typical fruit in a bowl, wine bottles and glasses, etc. when it struck me that these shapes are similar to the graphs created by rational functions.  It got me wondering about what it would be like to create art with these functions, and if anyone had ever tried it.So (as John McCain so…See More

### Do community colleges deliver?

I love math and love to teach math.  Unfortunately, most of my community college students view math as a necessary evil, thrust upon them by curricula designers who insist on math as a part of their program, whether they represent theengineering department or the art history department. The students I teach are completely focused on getting jobs.  They are enrolled in the community college because they have been told that this is the way to turn their lives aroundfrom being unemployed…See More
