Bradford Hansen-Smith replied to Rashmi Kathuria's discussion How do you introduce Geometry to class 6 students? in the group Introducing Math Concepts
"Rashmi, all of geometry seems to go back to the circle. I start with the circle and introduce it as unity (Whole) as well as a unit. Then we explore that properties of a 3-D circle by observation; not from books that only talk about circles as a…"

Bradford Hansen-Smith replied to Shahzad Karim's discussion submitting any research just made in mathematics in the group Math Problem Solving
"Shahzad, I have not found there is one place to go to showcase new discoveries in mathematics. Math is too big and fragmented, and solidified as a discipline, particularly in the educational field. I would question Colins statement about " the…"

Bradford Hansen-Smith replied to Madiraju Phaneendra's discussion how the product of two negatives wil be positive
"(-)+(-)= (+) Since movement is a right angle function; one line added to one line, when combined at right angles is a plus sign. (-)+(+)=(-) the second line is missing to make a plus sign, so it remains one line. (+)+(-)=(-) this is simply the…"

Bradford Hansen-Smith replied to Madiraju Phaneendra's discussion how the product of two negatives wil be positive
"The only true way two negatives will ever make a positive is for us to make friends with our enemies. That said, let's look at it another way. When we fold a circle in half we put any two imaginary points together and crease. This give us a…"

What are the principles of mathematics?

I find confusion when trying to understand the principles behind Mathematics. If we can not be clear about the principles that regulate the subject we teach how can we expect students to understand? Some clarification from math educators would be helpful.

Bradford Hansen-Smith replied to Rashmi Kathuria's discussion Teaching Mathematics by hands-on approach
"All the information that is being done in the above activities can easily be achieved by a simply process of folding the circle (doing) and observing (seeing) with attention to the information generated and discussing with others the observations…"

Bradford Hansen-Smith commented on Danny Clarke's group Teaching developmental math
"What I hear are attempts to think anew within confines of what is already in place in the social mind of how we define mathematics and education . It is based on a curriculum that is fragmented and strewn with isolated pieces of information. We can…"

Bradford Hansen-Smith replied to Rashmi Kathuria's discussion Do you like Math?
"The math I understand did not start with formulas, logic proofs, text books; I did not like that stuff. Math came from my own experience in observing patterns in my life; loosely called art, nature, informal kinds of geometry that informed me about…"
